Alex started playing tennis when he was about five years old, and soon after, began taking lessons and clinics at York Golf and Tennis Club. As he improved, he took private lessons and more intense clinics both at York Golf and Tennis Club and around the seacoast, which led him to participate in USTA matches. For the last four years, Alex has played on the Berwick Academy varsity tennis team.

This is Alex’s fifth year working at York Golf and Tennis Club, and you will find him out on the courts teaching camps, clinics, and private lessons. At times, you may see him working behind the desk in the Pro Shop enjoying the air conditioning. Alex enjoys spending the summer on the courts he grew up on, playing soccer, and hanging out at the beach. Alex is currently attending St. Lawrence University, where he intends to double major in Business and Economics with a minor in Psychology.

Henry has been playing tennis since he was little and began his tennis career here at the York Golf and Tennis Club. Henry started in junior clinics and camps when he was nine years old. As he got older, he started taking private lessons and more play-focused clinics. This led to him competing in USTA matches at York Golf and Tennis Club and against other clubs around the seacoast area. After he aged out of camps and clinics, he began to focus on private lessons to enhance his athletic training and in-game play. Henry played four years of varsity tennis at Berwick Academy, captaining the team for his final two seasons.

Henry is entering his sixth year of working at York Golf and Tennis Club. You can see him in the Pro Shop assisting members with any questions they may have. Henry has grown up a this club and loves spending parts of his summer here. Living only fifteen minutes away, he spends a lot of time hanging out with his friends and golfing as well. Henry is currently a Junior at Connecticut College and is majoring in Environmental Studies. He hopes to pursue business after college.

Tennis Practice

Sherry grew up in Kittery Point and first held a tennis racket on the red clay at York Golf and Tennis Club in the early 1960s. She and her husband were married on the grass lawn beside the Old Clubhouse, and their children learned to play in the junior programs. They went on to play on the York High School tennis teams. When asked to cover the Pro Shop on Sunday mornings, Sherry knew that she would enjoy the time spent in a familiar place with familiar, as well as new, people.

While teaching English full time at Portsmouth High School, Sherry was rarely able to work more often than Sunday mornings. In 2020, Sherry decided to fully retire after thirty-seven years in the classroom. Now she can spend more time in the Pro Shop and on the courts.

Sherry has always looked forward to the return of long-time members and staff, as well as the opportunity to meet new people at this beautiful club. As Sherry says, “May the season to come be filled with sunshine and fun!”

Racket and Ball

Hi my name is Hannah and I am a junior at Marshwood high school. I joined the tennis team 3 years ago and have loved the sport ever since. I also enjoy skiing, and am on the Marshwood Ski Team. Some hobbies of mine are cooking and baking, which I hope to make a career of someday. Working at YGTC has provided me with a lot of valuable work experience, and I love that it has allowed me to be a part of the tennis community!
